Accessories

Make it yours: bags, umbrellas and little luxuries

The rollator comes with a grey bag and good intentions. Four accessories pay for themselves in the first week; the rest is comfort, and comfort is what makes you take it out on a wet Tuesday. Before you order anything, measure the tube: most clamps fit 20–25 mm, and that one number saves a return.

In short

Four accessories earn their place in the first week: a bag that opens towards you, an umbrella holder so both hands stay on the brakes, a cane holder for the shop, and reflectors or a clip-on light for dusk. Everything else – seat cushion, cup holder, phone pouch, tray, cable lock – is comfort, and comfort counts. Check the tube diameter before ordering: most clamps fit 20–25 mm.

What matters

Before you order

Three checks that prevent the parcel going back.

Tube diameter

20–25 mm

Clamps and holders fit a range of tube sizes, usually 20–25 mm. Measure yours with a tape around the frame: circumference divided by 3.14 is the diameter.

Where it mounts

clear of brakes

Handlebar accessories must not block the brake levers or the fold. Frame accessories must not sit where the frame folds. Hold the accessory in place before you tighten anything.

Weight and balance

light up top

Everything on the handlebars makes the rollator front-heavy. Keep heavy things in the bag between the wheels; keep the handlebars for light things you need to reach.

The models

The accessories in detail

Universal models that fit most frames. Where a rollator maker sells its own version, the product page of your rollator will say so.

Bags: the one upgrade that changes everything

The bag that comes with a rollator is often small, grey and opens away from you. A good replacement opens towards you with a zip or a magnetic flap, has an inside pocket for the purse, is washable and comes in a colour you chose. Canvas and waxed cotton look best and age well; nylon is lightest and dries fastest; leather and vegan leather are the most elegant and the heaviest. Attach with hook-and-loop straps around the frame; most universal bags fit any rollator with a bag position between the handles or between the wheels.

Umbrella holders and rain

An umbrella holder is a clamp with a tube; the umbrella's handle slides in and the canopy sits above you while both hands stay on the grips. Choose one that tilts, so you can angle it into the wind, and one that fits your tube diameter. For real rain a cape is better: it covers you, the bag and the seat, and packs into the basket. Combine both and you can walk to the bakery in any weather.

Lights and reflectors

A black or dark-blue rollator is nearly invisible to drivers at dusk. Reflective strips on the back of the frame and the bag are the minimum; a clip-on LED front light with a red rear light makes you a cyclist in the eyes of a driver – seen from a hundred metres. Both fit any handlebar and cost less than a coffee a month.

Cane holders, cup holders, pouches

A cane holder is a clip at the frame and a loop lower down: the cane travels upright and is there when you leave the rollator at the café door and walk to the counter. Cup holders clamp to the handlebar; look for one with a spring or an adjustable ring so a small coffee and a water bottle both stay put. A handlebar pouch takes phone, keys and glasses – the three things you otherwise fish for in the bag. Phone pouches with a clear window let you read a message without taking the phone out.

Seat cushions, trays and locks

Rollator seats are narrow and often plastic; a thin memory-foam cushion with straps turns the seat into a bench you actually sit on. A tray on an indoor rollator carries a plate and a cup from kitchen to table. A cable lock is for the café terrace and the hotel breakfast room – a rollator is light and easy to walk off with. Thread the lock through the frame and a chair leg, not through a wheel.

What we would not buy

  • Baskets that hang in front of the handlebars: they make the rollator front-heavy and tip it on kerbs.
  • Hard plastic seats sold as 'comfort' upgrades – a cushion on the original seat does more.
  • Universal 'speed' wheels for indoor rollators – fit the maker's own replacement wheels; the brakes are set for them.
  • Anything that needs drilling. Clamps and straps are enough and do not void the warranty.

Questions women ask us

Which bag fits my rollator?

Universal bags attach with hook-and-loop straps and fit almost any frame with a bag position between the handles or between the wheels. Check the maximum width of the bag position on your rollator and the bag's dimensions. Makers like Rollz, byACRE and Topro also sell their own bags in several colours.

Does an umbrella holder fit every rollator?

Most fit tube diameters of 20–25 mm, which covers nearly all rollators; some adapt to 30 mm. Measure the circumference of your frame tube with a tape and divide by 3.14. Mount it where it does not block the brake lever or the fold.

Can I put a basket on a rollator?

Yes, but keep it low: a basket under the seat or between the wheels keeps the rollator stable. Baskets in front of the handlebars make it front-heavy. Most rollators take 5 kg in the bag or basket.

How do I make my rollator more visible at night?

Reflective tape on the back legs and the bag, plus a clip-on LED set with a white front light and a red rear light. Light-coloured frames – champagne, rose, oyster white – are also easier to see than black.

Do accessories void the warranty?

Clamp-on and strap-on accessories do not. Drilling the frame does. Replacement wheels and brake parts should come from the maker so the brakes keep working as designed.

Where the information comes from

Weights, dimensions and colours come from the manufacturers’ websites and the Amazon listings; we have not tested the products in a laboratory. We compare the data, read owner reviews and say plainly who a model suits and who it does not. We earn a commission on purchases made through our links; it has no influence on which models we show or what we say about them.
