Rollators

Lightweight rollators: because you lift it more often than you think

Into the car, over a kerb, up the bus step, into the hallway. A rollator gets lifted many times a week, and under seven kilos that stops being work. Here are the lightest models with a seat, what the weight does and does not buy you, and the sizes to check first.

In short

Under 7 kg (15 lbs) a rollator lifts easily with one hand. Carbon models – byACRE Carbon Ultralight, Rehasense Athlon SL, Saljol Carbon, Russka Vital Carbon – weigh about 4.8 to 6 kg, the carbon Drive Nitro Elite CF about 6.8 kg; the best aluminium models (Dietz Taima, TrustCare Let's Go Out, Stander Space Saver, Drive Nitro, Topro Troja 5G) about 5.3 to 7.6 kg. Weight only pays off if the handle height, seat height and brakes fit you, so read the size guide before you order.

One hand, no bracing: that is what 4.8 kg feels like

Quick picks

Three we would start with

The carbon benchmark first, then two more we would start with in your country's store.

What matters

What weight really changes – and what it does not

Four things to check before the gram count.

Lifting, not walking

On the move you push, not carry. Weight matters when you lift: car boot, kerbs, steps, buses. If you never lift it, a heavier rollator is often more stable.

Fold width

20–30 cm

A rollator that folds lengthwise to 25 cm fits behind a car seat and stands on its own in a hallway. Side folds are wider and lie flat.

Handle height

wrist crease

Light is useless if the handles are wrong. Stand upright: the grip belongs at your wrist crease. Petite women need handles that go down to about 70 cm, tall women up to 100 cm or more – and many light models start at 78–80 cm.

Seat height

50–57 cm

Light rollators often have high seats – the byACRE Carbon Ultralight 56–61 cm, the TrustCare models about 60 cm. Feet flat, knees at a right angle: for most women that is 50–57 cm. Petite women look for 45–52 cm.

A good fit if you want the most rollator for the money and a model everyone can service.

Less so if you want a padded seat or the lowest weight – the Nitro Elite CF is the carbon version.

How light is light enough?

Think of a bag of shopping. Four kilos is a bag you lift without thinking; seven kilos is a full bag you brace for; ten kilos is two bags. A rollator under 7 kg is the full bag: fine for a car boot once a day, fine for one kerb. Under 6 kg is the bag you carry up a flight of stairs. Below 5 kg you stop noticing it, and that is where carbon fibre comes in.

The weights on this page are frame weights without the bag. Add 300–600 g for the bag and whatever you put in it. Manufacturers measure differently – some include the basket, some do not – so the comparison table shows the figure from the manufacturer's own specification and names the source under each model.

Carbon or aluminium?

Carbon fibre frames can save one to three kilos against a typical aluminium rollator – but not always: the Dietz Taima S-GT weighs about 5.3 kg in aluminium, and the carbon Drive Nitro Elite CF is only about 0.4 kg lighter than the aluminium Nitro. You pay for carbon: a carbon rollator costs two to four times a good aluminium one. The aluminium models here are not heavy; a Topro Troja 5G or a Drive Nitro at 7.2–7.6 kg is still light enough for most women. The question is how often you lift. Several times a day, on stairs or into a high boot: carbon or the lightest aluminium. Once a day, on the flat: aluminium, and spend the difference on a bag you love.

The petite exception

Light rollators tend to be tall rollators. If you are under 160 cm, choose by handle height first and weight second: the Rehasense Athlon SL in size S (from about 63 cm, about 5 kg), the Topro Troja 5G in size S (from about 69 cm) and, in the USA, the NOVA Zoom 18 (from about 70 cm) bring the handles down far enough. The byACRE Carbon Ultralight does not – even its Compact size starts at about 79 cm. The size guide has the full table.

Brakes and wheels on light rollators

Lighter frames flex a little more, and small wheels save weight but catch on gravel. Look for 20 cm (8 inch) wheels as the minimum for pavements; the Drive Nitro's 25 cm front wheels roll over cracks and tram tracks that stop smaller wheels. Brakes should lock with a push down and release with a lift – loop brakes that you squeeze all the way are tiring for arthritic hands. Every model here has both brake types described in the Amazon listing; we note it where it matters.

Who should not choose by weight

If you lean heavily on the handles, have had a fall in the last six months or feel dizzy when you stand up, stability beats weight: a wider stance, a lower bag between the wheels and brakes you can lock quickly. Read rollators for balance problems first and talk to your physiotherapist. A rollator on prescription is usually a standard model; the guide on what your health system pays explains how to add a lighter one.

Questions women ask us

How much does a lightweight rollator weigh?

Carbon fibre rollators weigh about 4.8 to 6.8 kg (10.6–15 lbs); light aluminium rollators about 5.3 to 7.6 kg (11.7–16.8 lbs). Standard aluminium rollators are 8–10 kg, steel ones often more.

Is a carbon rollator worth the price?

If you lift the rollator several times a day – into a car boot, up steps, onto public transport – the weight saved is worth it. Compare the actual models, though: some carbon rollators save only a few hundred grams over a light aluminium one. If you mostly walk on the flat and lift it once a day, a good aluminium model does the same job for a third of the price.

Can a light rollator still carry a heavier woman?

Yes. The byACRE Carbon Ultralight and Topro Pegasus are rated for 130 kg (286 lbs), the Rehasense Athlon SL and Saljol Carbon for 150 kg (330 lbs); a few compact models allow less, such as the Stander Space Saver at 113 kg (250 lbs). Check the maximum user weight in the table; it is about the frame's strength, not about how light it feels.

Which lightweight rollator folds smallest?

The TrustCare Let's Go Out folds to about 20 cm and the Saljol Carbon to about 21 cm; the Rehasense Athlon SL to about 23 cm, the byACRE Carbon Ultralight and the Drive Nitro to about 25 cm, standing on their own. The Stander Space Saver folds into a compact block with a footprint of about 25 Γ— 28 cm but has small wheels. A fold of 25 cm or less stands behind the seat of most cars.

Is there a light rollator on prescription?

In most countries the prescribed or insurer-paid model is a standard rollator around 8–10 kg. You can usually choose a lighter model and pay the difference yourself; in Germany this is called an Aufzahlung, in the USA an upgrade outside the Medicare-approved amount. Our insurance guide explains it for your country.

Where the information comes from

Weights, dimensions and colours come from the manufacturers’ websites and the Amazon listings; we have not tested the products in a laboratory. We compare the data, read owner reviews and say plainly who a model suits and who it does not.
