Rollators

Shopping rollators: hands free, basket full

Bread, flowers, two bottles of water and the Saturday paper. A shopping rollator is built around the bag: large, low between the wheels so the frame stays stable, sometimes insulated, with a hook for the second bag and a seat for the queue at the fishmonger. In Japan this is the 'silver car', the most common walking aid in the country. Here are the models that do market day well.

In short

Choose a bag of at least 10 litres mounted low between the wheels, a hook for a second bag and a seat for the queue. The Rollz Flex and TrustCare Let's Shop are built around the bag; the Drive Nitro and Topro Troja 5G carry a good bag on an all-round frame – where the first two are not sold, start with the Nitro. Most rollators take 5 kg in the bag – two bottles of water and the vegetables – and no more.

The bag is the point of market day

Quick picks

Three for market day

Rollators designed around the bag where your store sells them, and all-rounders with a good bag and a seat for the queue.

What matters

What makes a good shopping rollator

Four things that decide whether the shopping comes home upright.

Bag position

low, centred

Low and between the wheels: the weight sits inside the frame and the rollator stays stable. Bags that hang high or in front make it tip on kerbs.

Volume and limit

5–10 kg

10–20 litres is a normal weekly shop for one. Most rollators are rated for 5 kg in the bag; shopping rollators up to 8–10 kg. More than that and the brakes struggle on a slope.

Opening

opens to you

A bag that opens towards you, with a zip or a magnetic flap, means you can reach your purse without walking round the rollator. A lid keeps the rain and the curious out.

Seat

with brakes

The queue at the bakery, the bench that is already taken: a seat turns the wait into a rest. Lock both brakes before you sit.

A good fit if you want one rollator for everything – town, park, shopping – and value stability over the last gram.

Less so if you want the lightest possible model for stairs and car boots.

How much can I put in the bag?

Read the maker's limit for the bag, not just for the user: most standard rollators allow 5 kg in the bag, shopping rollators 8–10 kg. Five kilos is two one-litre bottles, a loaf, vegetables for three days and the paper. Beyond that the rollator gets harder to steer, the brakes have to hold more on a slope, and the frame can tip when you lift the front over a kerb. If you regularly carry more, a shopping rollator with the bag between the wheels is the right tool – or a second trip, which is also a second walk.

Silver cars: the Japanese answer

In Japan the most common walking aid is the silver car (シルバーカー): a light shopping trolley with a seat, a large bag and brakes, made for the daily walk to the supermarket. It is lighter and narrower than a European rollator and designed to be pushed in front of you rather than walked inside. Makers like εΉΈε’Œθ£½δ½œζ‰€ (TacaoF), ε³Άθ£½δ½œζ‰€ (Shima) and ウィズワン (WithOne) sell them in fabrics and colours that would not look out of place in a department store. If you live in Japan, our Japanese pages list them with the care-insurance rules; elsewhere the Rollz Flex and TrustCare Let's Shop are the closest relatives.

Insulated bags

Several shopping rollators have an insulated compartment or a removable cool bag. On a summer market day that is the difference between butter and a puddle. If yours does not, a soft cool bag that fits the basket costs little – see accessories.

Hooks, nets and the second bag

A hook under the handle takes a second light bag – the bread, the flowers – without unbalancing the frame. Nets and side pockets are for the small things: keys, phone, the shopping list. Anything heavy on a hook pulls the rollator sideways; keep the weight in the main bag between the wheels. A cross-body bag for purse and phone leaves both hands on the grips and nothing valuable in the basket when you sit down for a coffee.

Questions women ask us

How much weight can a rollator bag carry?

Standard rollators allow about 5 kg in the bag, shopping rollators 8–10 kg. The limit is printed in the manual and often on a label inside the bag. Heavier loads make steering harder and braking on slopes unsafe.

What is a silver car?

The Japanese term (シルバーカー) for a light shopping trolley with a seat and brakes, the most common walking aid in Japan. It is pushed in front of you and designed for the daily walk to the shops. European relatives are the Rollz Flex and TrustCare Let's Shop.

Can I take a shopping rollator into the supermarket?

Yes, it is a walking aid and shops must let you in with it. Put the shopping in your own bag as you go, or push a small shop basket on the seat. Lock the brakes at the checkout.

Is a shopping rollator stable with a full bag?

Yes, if the bag sits low between the wheels – that is the whole design idea. Rollators with the bag hanging in front of the handles become front-heavy and tip more easily on kerbs.

Which shopping rollator folds for the car?

The Rollz Flex folds lengthwise and stands (about 33 cm folded); the TrustCare Let's Shop folds to about 21 cm and the Drive Nitro to about 25 cm. Japanese silver cars fold flat for the train. Check the folded width against your boot – the folding rollators page explains how.

Where the information comes from

Weights, dimensions and colours come from the manufacturers’ websites and the Amazon listings; we have not tested the products in a laboratory. We compare the data, read owner reviews and say plainly who a model suits and who it does not. We earn a commission on purchases made through our links; it has no influence on which models we show or what we say about them.
