Rollators in the UK: the NHS, VAT relief and the model you actually want

Two things lower the price of a rollator in the UK and most people only know one of them. The NHS may supply a basic walking frame or rollator free after an assessment. And when you buy privately, you can usually claim VAT relief – zero VAT instead of 20 percent – by signing a short declaration, no doctor's letter needed. Here is how both work, and how to combine them.

In short

The NHS can supply a basic walking frame or rollator free of charge after an assessment by an occupational therapist or physiotherapist – ask your GP or local community equipment service. If you buy privately, most rollators qualify for VAT relief: you pay 0 percent instead of 20 percent VAT by confirming on a simple eligibility declaration that you are chronically sick or disabled; retailers show the VAT-free price on the product page. Design rollators such as byACRE, Rollz and TrustCare are a private purchase – with VAT relief.

The assessment, the declaration, the 20 percent

Getting a walking aid through the NHS

Walking aids are provided through community equipment services, usually after an assessment by an occupational therapist or a physiotherapist. The route in: ask your GP for a referral, ask the hospital physiotherapy team before you are discharged, or contact your council's adult social care team and ask for an occupational therapy assessment. The therapist measures you, watches you walk and prescribes the aid – a walking frame, a two-wheeled walker or a rollator. It is loaned free of charge and returned when you no longer need it. Waiting times vary by area; after a hospital stay it is usually quick.

What the NHS supplies is a basic model: sturdy, grey, often heavier than you would choose. It is the right thing for the flat and for recovery. Many women keep the NHS rollator for indoors and buy the one they actually want for going out.

VAT relief: 20 percent off, no letter needed

Products designed or adapted for people who are chronically sick or disabled are zero-rated for VAT when they are bought by such a person for personal use. Rollators, walking frames, walking sticks, bath seats and grab rails all qualify. You do not need a doctor's letter or a registered disability: you sign (or tick online) an eligibility declaration stating your condition – for example 'arthritis' or 'reduced mobility following hip replacement' – and the retailer removes the VAT. 'Chronically sick or disabled' means a physical or mental impairment with a long-term and substantial effect on everyday activities, or a condition the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness. Being elderly or temporarily injured does not qualify on its own; a long-term condition that affects your walking does.

What the declaration looks like

Name, address, a short description of the condition, a signature and the date. Most mobility retailers – CareCo, Complete Care Shop, NRS Healthcare – show the VAT-free price with a tick box at the checkout. On Amazon.co.uk the relief depends on the seller: some mobility sellers offer it through a claim form after purchase, many do not. If VAT relief matters for an expensive model, compare the Amazon price with a specialist retailer's VAT-free price.

Buying privately: where and what to look for

Specialist mobility retailers let you walk a few metres with three models and set the height; online gives you the full range and 30-day returns on most rollators if used indoors only. Our buying guide has the four questions and the measurements; the size guide the handle and seat heights. If the pavements where you live are the usual British mix of cracks and cambers, read outdoor rollators first – wheel size matters more here than almost anywhere.

Motability, charities and Access to Work

The Motability Scheme is for cars, scooters and powered wheelchairs, not rollators. Charities help with walking aids in specific situations: the Royal British Legion and SSAFA for veterans, Independent Age and Age UK with advice and sometimes grants, local disability charities with equipment loans. If you work, Access to Work can fund equipment you need to do your job, including a rollator for the commute. The balance guide covers the NHS falls services that assess and advise after a fall.

Ireland in short

In the Republic of Ireland, walking aids are supplied free through the HSE community occupational therapy service for medical card holders and at reduced cost for others; ask your GP or public health nurse for a referral. Private purchases from amazon.co.uk ship to Ireland; VAT relief is a UK scheme and does not apply, but Irish VAT refunds for aids and appliances can be claimed from Revenue on form VAT 61A.

Questions women ask us

Can I get a rollator free on the NHS?

Yes, after an assessment by an occupational therapist or physiotherapist, through your local community equipment service. Ask your GP, the hospital physiotherapy team or your council's adult social care. The model is a basic one, loaned free and returned when no longer needed.

Who qualifies for VAT relief on a rollator?

Anyone who is chronically sick or disabled and buys the rollator for personal use. That includes long-term conditions that affect walking – arthritis, MS, Parkinson's, heart or lung disease, the lasting effects of a stroke or a joint replacement. You declare it on a short form; no doctor's letter is needed. Being elderly alone does not qualify.

Does Amazon offer VAT relief on rollators?

It depends on the seller. Some mobility sellers on Amazon.co.uk offer a VAT relief claim after purchase; many do not. Specialist retailers show the VAT-free price directly. For an expensive model, compare both.

Can I keep the NHS rollator and buy my own?

Yes. Many women keep the loaned basic model for indoors and buy a lighter or prettier one for going out. Return the NHS rollator when you no longer need it.

Does the NHS supply rollators with a seat?

Community equipment services usually supply walking frames and two- or four-wheeled walkers; whether a seat is included depends on the assessment. If you need to sit on the way, say so – the therapist can prescribe a four-wheeled rollator with a seat.

Where the information comes from

Weights, dimensions and colours come from the manufacturers’ websites and the Amazon listings; we have not tested the products in a laboratory. We compare the data, read owner reviews and say plainly who a model suits and who it does not. We earn a commission on purchases made through our links; it has no influence on which models we show or what we say about them.
